It is with baited breath that I await the April release of The Periodic Table: Elements with Style. Written by Adrian Dingle and illustrated by Simon Basher, the book presents each element with a series of portraits, followed by a description of the element in personal-ad style.Read more about this new release at the Publisher's Weekly article Humor Helps Kids Brave the Elements.
The March edition of Science and Children is out. It contains the 2007 edition of Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12. A product of NSTA's collaboration with the CBC, this list has been published for more than 30 years running. Among this year's many great titles are:
- Onward: A Photobiography of African-American Polar Explorer Matthew Henson by Delores Johnson - I included this beauty in my thematic book list on African American scientists and inventors.
- Team Moon: How 400,000 People Landed Apollo 11 on the Moon by Catherine Thimmesh - This book won the Sibert Medal for most distinguished informational book.
- Quest for the Tree Kangaroo: An Expedition to the Cloud Forest of New Guinea by Sy Montgomery - This book was a Siebert Honor book and the winner of the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award for outstanding nonfiction.
- Butterfly Eyes and Other Secrets of the Meadow by Joyce Sidman - If you are a member of the Kidlitosphere, you already know about this winner of the Cybils for poetry. Don't miss Elaine Magliaro's two part series on the author over at Blue Rose Girls. Once you're done, visit Joyce's web site for lots of terrific stuff.
- Oh Rats! The Story of Rats and People by Albert Marrin - I will gleefully admit this was one of my favorite reads.
