Monday Poetry Stretch (On a Tuesday) - Homework

I've had a hard time getting my homework done these days. Over the weekend my son asked why I still have homework if I'm not in school anymore. Well, technically, I am still in school (and will be in school until they drag me out kicking and screaming), though he doesn't see it this way. I did try to explain that sometimes people just need to bring their work home. My homework consisted of reading through a stack of poetry books published in 2011. Not a bad assignment as far as I'm concerned.

My students are complaining about homework, though they're doing it. My son is complaining about his. (He's doing his too!) So, now that we've hit mid-year (academically), let's write about the homework that's dragging us down. Perhaps someone out there will write an ode to homework that's actually positive!

  1. Oooh! Your prompt inspired a poem that'll be on my blog tomorrow (back with a link then). It'll be a Wednesday Poem for the Monday Poetry Stretch (On a Tuesday).

  2. Homework: Or D, None of the Above

    Cat
    Sat
    On my mouse.

    Laptop
    Stop
    In the house.

    Limb
    Landed
    On a wire.

    Hit
    House,
    Big fire.

    Dad
    Had
    A Mighty shock.

    Grandma
    Grandpa
    At the doc.

    Look at columns
    A, B, C
    Please pick one
    Excuse for me.

    Signed,
    Your student

  3. If I Were in Charge of Homework

    1.
    Dig in your backyard
for treasure. Find a mouse skeleton.
Or dig in your neighbor's yard.
    Watch out for the dog.
    (Maybe he will help?)

    2.
    Ride your bike
    to the library.
    Check out books
about people who rode their bikes
    across time
    or to other worlds.
    Read the one
    with the most colorful cover
    aloud to the crows.
    Or pigeons, if you have
    no crows.

    3.
    Watch TV with your friend.
    Do 5 jumping jacks
    whenever someone says
    "Goodbye" or "rhinoceros."
    Do 20 cartwheels
    if they say "Goodbye, rhinoceros."

    4.
    Cut your school homework
    into 47 pieces
    and rearrange it
    to make new homework.
    Then don't do it.

    5.
    Make a dragon
    out of household objects.
    Make a robot
    out of rocks and sticks.
    Have a parade
    with the dragon, the robot,
    and your little sister's dolls.
    Throw confetti.

    6.
    Invent a song
    about apples. Invent a song
    about tarantulas.
    Sing tremendously
about anything you can think of
    except homework.
    The End.

  4. The No-Homework Diet

    homework is
    a nasty chore,
    it eats up
    all my time.
    but when I tell
    my teacher this,
    she only
    feeds me more!

  5. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

My homework was to hurry home
to write a shiny, brand new poem.

    I jotted down ...

    taking out the trash
    washing dinner dishes,
    kissing my infant sister Trish,
    telling Spot my secret wishes.

After a few minutes I was surprised to be done
Please don't tell a soul that it was kind of fun.

  6. Homework (A triolet)

Some homework is made to forget
but sometimes it can be fun and easily done
yesterday I’d say, I’d rather practice my clarinet
some homework is made to forget
today I get to draw a girl I met
I’ll draw her hair bright and yellow as the sun
some homework is made to forget
but sometimes it can be fun and easily done
