Monday Poetry Stretch - Joy

This weekend I watched my niece get married. I'm a bit shocked that time has passed so quickly and that we've all aged (some more gracefully than others). There were lots of smiles this weekend, a great deal of happiness, and a whole lot of joy.

What makes you happy or joyful? Let's write about that this week. I hope you will join me. Please share a link to your poem or the poem itself in the comments.

  1. What a good topic, Tricia!

    Joy

    I stop the car to take photos
    of clouds, trying to catch hold
    of the way they billow over blue
    like white aprons on blue dresses.

    My niece has learned to run,
    staggering fast on little bow legs
    straight across the cool green
    prickle of summer grass.

    My mother whistles
    under her breath as she bakes
    banana bread. Her music
    haunts the kitchen like the ghosts
    of recipes past while she drops
    a yellow stick of butter
    into the portentous batter.

  2. Joy Contained

    My standing changed,
    My spine rearranged,
    I am half an inch taller.
    (Instead of being smaller.)
    All pain has disappeared,
    Not what I'd feared.
    I've walked a full mile.
    Did you see me smile?
    Joy contained.
    (And it hasn't even rained.)

  3. FIDO MEDICINE
    Another day of word daggers hitting their mark:
    Stupid, gross, nerd, freak, worthless;
    Another day of being shunned at lunchtime
    Munching by myself, searching;
    Another day of feeling that life isn’t on my side
    ‘til I open the door … and then
    Another day of Fido leaping onto me
    Barking, twirling, licking;
    Another day of love being the best medicine
    In our universe.

  4. Joy
    Some get their joy from flowers.
    Some get their joy from wishes.
    Some get their joy from children.
    How my Joy cleans the dishes.
