NPM 4-2: Sailing Into National Poetry Month

I am late to the party, having nothing planned for the month but to share poetry as it moves me.

Can two words be a poem? I'd like to think so. Yesterday at the sunrise Easter service, the sermon ended with the words "Joy wins." Those words ran through my mind all day and are still with me. I'm going to carry them for a while.

Today I'm sharing a poem Lucille Clifton.

blessing the boats
(at St. Mary’s)

may the tide
that is entering even now
the lip of our understanding
carry you out
beyond the face of fear
may you kiss
the wind then turn from it
certain that it will
love your back   may you
open your eyes to water
water waving forever
and may you in your innocence
sail through this to that

Happy Monday all.

  1. I think a poem can definitely be two words. :) Happy Poetry Month. Thanks for sharing this poem with us.

  2. I do love Lucille Clifton, and I think you and I landed on the same thematic prompt for the month -- via different means, but here we are. I'm glad you sparked me doing these daily exercises lo these many years ago, and I'm happy you're doing them still too!

  3. Love Lucille and love that blessing--it's both vast and intimate, still and moving. Happy NPM!
