Poetry Friday - Farewell to the Farm

I have been reading the original edition of Robert Louis Stevenson's book A Child's Garden of Verses. Since I'm still caught up in the emotions of losing my childhood home, poems of loss seem to be speaking to me.
Farewell to the Farm

The coach is at the door at last;
The eager children, mounting fast
And kissing hands, in chorus sing:
Good-bye, good-bye, to everything!

To house and garden, field and lawn,
The meadow-gates we swang upon,
To pump and stable, tree and swing,
Good-bye, good-bye, to everything!

And fare you well for evermore,
O ladder at the hayloft door,
O hayloft where the cobwebs cling,
Good-bye, good-bye, to everything!

Crack goes the whip, and off we go;
The trees and houses smaller grow;
Last, round the woody turn we swing;
Good-bye, good-bye, to everything!
The round up is being hosted by Becky over at Becky's Book Reviews. Do stop by and check out all the great poetry being shared this week. Happy poetry Friday, all!

  1. We take our 4th graders to camp in the spring. We stay one night, and for some of them, this is the first time they've been away from home. It is both terrifying and exhilarating for them.

    This poem reminds me of how they shout their good-byes to camp as the bus slowly winds up the lane toward the road home.
