Times Best of the Decade - Books

The critics at Time Magazine have weighed in on the best movies, TV, books and theater of the decade. Lev Grossman (THE MAGICIANS, THE CODEX) has selected the 10 best books of the decade. There is one young adult book on the list (can you guess which HP it is?), and at least one that I think would make a fine crossover book (see number 2).

Here's a list of the ten, with links to the Time summaries.
I've read eight of the ten. How about you? Is there an adult read that you think should be on this list? Or better yet, how about a worthy YA title that adults would love?

  1. Was someone asking for a worthy YA title that adults would love? :) This here adult read and heartily recommends Markus Zusak's 2005 novel "The Book Thief."

  2. Jonathan Lethem's Fortress of Solitude is probably my favorite read of the decade. I've read 7 of these, although two of the remainder (the first two on the list) have been on my "to read" list for some time.

  3. American Gods was fabulous. I haven't read any of the rest.

  4. I'm embarrassed to admit I've read only three of these, although my niece just loaned me American Gods. My favorite book of the past decade is probably Bel Canto, by Ann Patchett, and I completely agree about The Book Thief.

  5. I haven't read any of these (but will look into them soon) so maybe my opinion is skewed but both khaled hosseini books were awesome.

  6. Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks is my favorite book of the decade--well-written, historical fiction. I also liked Mudbound by Hillary Jordan. I prefer "thin" books, most of the books on the Grossman list are too long for me!

  7. I've read about half of the books on the list. How could any decade list not include The Road? Probably the most profoundly beautiful book I've ever read. I loved The Magicians- Harry Potter for grown-ups. My fav of the decade is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. Just awesome.
