In this final month of the year, our challenge was to write a poem of gratitude in any form. I've been pondering favorite lines of poetry and using them to write my own poems, so today I'm sharing a golden shovel that uses a line from "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T.S. Eliot.
A Golden Shovel for My Poetry Sisters
This is beyond me, myself, and I.
We are friends who have
been tested and measured
by all that life can throw at us. Out
of affection and gratitude for my
sisters, I declare that this life
would not be the same with-
out you. I am the tea to your coffee,
you are the forks to my spoons.

Oh, Tricia!
ReplyDeleteWhat a GREAT idea. Tabatha Yeats did a bio poem this week based on one Langston Hughes did, and I thought that, along with the Golden Shovel form, that's going to be my pick for a poem form for next year. I love how you wove us into a poem.
Tricia, this made me cry. My life is always so scattered with freelance stuff and writing, plus family. And yet I'm surrounded by so many amazing people, like all our poetry sisterhood, who I would really like to get to know more deeply. We HAVE been through a lot together, and what a wonderful poem to celebrate that. Someday...an in-person retreat for all of us together.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to measure out my life, year after year, with you and my dear poetry sisters. xo Sara
