Ten Books I Can't Live Without

Thanks to Kelly over at Big A, little a for the link.
Michele at Scholar's Blog has come up with a World Book Day meme. The question is: What ten books can't you live without?
If I were stranded on a desert island and required to read the same books over and over, these would get me through.
  • Straight Man by Richard Russo
  • Howard's End by E. M. Forster
  • On Beauty by Zadie Smith
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
  • The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkein
  • All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot
  • Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie
  • Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
  • The Poetry of Robert Frost: The Collected Poems, Complete and Unabridged edited by Edward Connery Lathem

  1. I feel bad now that I didn't include any poetry on my list... I really think I might have to revisit this meme again!

  2. Hi Michele,
When I was writing the list I found it hard to stop at 10, but after careful consideration, I realized I needed some poetry, and decided that Frost had to be the one.
    Thanks for the great meme!
    Regards,
    Tricia

  3. I know I couldn't have lived without the following books when I was an elementary school teacher:

    -CHARLOTTE'S WEB

-RAMONA THE PEST and other Ramona stories

-WINNIE THE POOH and THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER

-MY LITTLE SISTER ATE ONE HARE by Bill Grossman

-Some books by William Steig, such as THE AMAZING BONE and DOCTOR DE SOTO

-THE TAILYPO: A GHOST STORY, told by Joanna Galdone and illustrated by Paul Galdone. My students absolutely loved this book! It was a favorite that I was asked to read over and over again.

-WILEY AND THE HAIRY MAN, adapted from an American folktale and illustrated by Molly Bang

-Randall Jarrell's translation of SNOW-WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, which was illustrated by Nancy Ekholm Burkert

I know I'm leaving out hundreds of books--but these were some of the staples of my read-aloud library.
