Poetry Friday - End of Summer

After spending the day at the beach yesterday, wondering where summer had gone, I thought it appropriate to end with this poem by Rachel Hadas.
The End of Summer
by Rachel Hadas

Sweet smell of phlox drifting across the lawn—
an early warning of the end of summer.
August is fading fast, and by September
the little purple flowers will all be gone.

Season, project, and vacation done.
One more year in everybody’s life.
Add a notch to the old hunting knife
Time keeps testing with a horny thumb.

  2. This poet marks time the way I do -- not the hunting knife, but the fact that the beginning of a new school year is more of a New Year than the one we mark with calendars in January!

  3. Hi Mary Lee,
This is exactly how I feel. The new year for me always begins with the start of school. I can't remember the last time I bought a calendar that wasn't academic.
I hope your year has gotten off to a good start.
