NPM 2021 - Found Poem 17

Today's poem comes from Ocean Sunlight: How Tiny Plants Feed the Seas, written by Molly Bang and Penny Chisholm and illustrated by Molly Bang.

Phytoplankton

blue water
green plants
everywhere
countless shapes
and sizes
so small
tiny plants
drifting
invisible pasture
feeds all life
in the sea

  1. I am making myself a list of poem types I am going to spend about 2 weeks on and your Found poems here are encouraging me to start with these. I am curious about this book which I don't know. I am curious how many pages you used or if it is a picture book and used all of it? Thanks, Tricia.

    1. OK, so I clicked the link and answered my question ie 48 pages, picture book, but still curious if you used all of it? I attended a Zoom talk with the South Dakota Poet Laureate, Christine Stewart-Nunez and received a lovely packet of materials one of which is a set of pages from a book, cut up and a black market to create a found poem! Thanks to FB and poet friend, Jane Heitman Healy for telling me about the talk and sending on the envelope filled of goodies.

    2. Janet,
I take copyright and fair use very seriously, so using an entire book would not work. I go through the pages and pick out words and phrases. My poems use the exact wording in the order you find them in the book. The nice thing about nonfiction picture books is that they often have back matter and I pull from that as well. This poem includes words from 4 different pages.

I will also tell you that I have used this document as a guide.

Happy to chat about this further if you like.

    3. Very helpful and just what I wanted to know!!! Thanks for the info and the link. I agree 100% about Fair Use Code. I was thinking about sharing this and doing with kids and really wanted to understand the process. Janet

    4. Of course! Happy to help. I think you can write found poems in many ways. I gave myself the constraint of writing in order, but you could have students collect words and phrases and arrange them in any way they like.

    5. Tricia, do you have a post for the Progressive Poem?
