Poetry Sisters Write Triolets

This month Liz challenged us to write a triolet that included at least two of the following words:
  • orange
  • fall
  • chill
  • light
  • change
I like triolets, but man, are they hard to write. Even though a triolet is an 8-line poem, it uses only two rhymes used throughout. Additionally, the first line is repeated in the fourth and seventh lines, while the second line is repeated in the final line. Because of this, only five different poetic lines are written.  The rhyme scheme for a triolet is ABaAabAB (where capital letters stand for repeated lines).

Here are a few poems I scratched out while flat on my back this week.

Triolet 1
Despite the orange and red of fall
some folks prefer the green of spring
choose lilacs over pumpkin haul

How bright the orange and red of fall
that usher out the bat and ball
and welcome geese upon the wing

Oh glorious orange and red of fall
you far surpass the green of spring!

Triolet 2
She fell in love with a flier
  but it’s dangerous to fall
for the chills and thrills of a wire
She fell in love with a flier
  knowing he'd walk through fire
  to answer a curtain call
It’s hard to love a flier
  when it’s dangerous to fall

Triolet 3
I prefer things stay the same
 yes, change is overrated
Since life is but a waiting game
I prefer things stay the same
Won't fall for highly specious claims
what's meant to be is fated
I hope to God things stay the same
 for change is overrated.

  1. I think they're hard too. But you did so well! Maybe I'll give one a try too...

  2. These are all a treat -- I'm not sure if I love the second one or the third one more. That this dude would go through a fire for a curtain-call made me shudder:
It’s hard to love a flier
    when it’s dangerous to fall
    - both true and terrifyingly accurate about some of our mismatched inner worlds. Sheesh.

Agreed, though -- change is VASTLY overrated, and here we are, on the cusp of something changing. It's enough to make us all back away and wince.

Well done for rising from your sick-bed for these. Now, go lie down, Tricia!

    1. Actually, I wrote while I was flat on my back. It was quite an interesting proposition! And I did it at night, using my phone as a flashlight. Oh, and I did it on Thursday. Nothing like waiting until the last minute. I was mulling things over in my head for several days, so it was really just putting pen to paper that came at the end. I still can't write on my computer.

  3. Oh, so clever! I agree it's a very hard form but you make it look easy!

  4. Thank you for reminding me of this form. I so would like to get an online poetry group started. The first one has strong images.

  5. It's always interesting to see where words take you. Each one is fun, a comment on life moments I think. Well done, Tricia, even on the back!

  7. Hi Tricia, happy to see you were running again. Hope you're healing up okay. these are really fun, but number two is my absolute favorite. By a mile. What an unusual topic and then your imagery is just awesome. It felt so concrete and shivery and dangerous. Well done!

    1. Thanks, Laura. Not running yet, but I did get out with the team and walked. After 3 months of training, I'm really struggling with the possibility that I might not be able to run. My teammates all think I should walk it if I can't run. Time will tell.

And I'm glad you liked the poem. I'm not sure where it came from. I suppose I was looking for topics other than fall and this one just popped out Poetry is funny that way. Sometimes the words go where I never expected.

  8. Oh, Tricia -- these are incredible. I especially love the first two -- but that second one -- WOW!! -- where did that come from? It's so visceral and word-perfect. Hope you're feeling better, my friend...

  9. These are amazing! I love the second and third ones. Change is hard. And it's hard to know when to welcome needed change, even when hard, and when to resist change that takes us backwards.
