NPM 2019 Day 10: Picture Day

I few weeks ago I was visiting my elementary school and it was picture day. For the students, it was a day filled with excitement and more than a few tears. It brought back a lot of memories of sitting for those photos. Alas, we did not have the luxury of digital cameras in my day, so there more than a few years of lopsided grins and closed eyes. Today's poem is about this day and what I imagine it's still like for so many students.

Picture Day
I face the mirror on the wall
practice smiling, stand up tall
tilt my head, place hand to chin
try to mask the fear within

Is my smile really crooked?
Nose so pointy at the end?
Is my face a perfect oval?
Ears too big to recommend?

The face I see each day
the one that frowns and laughs
is not the one revealed
in my school photographs

  1. Oh, this reminds me so much of teaching. My poor kids - there really were a lot of tears; it was so stressful for them from about sixth grade up. I think my very worst school picture was my junior year in high school; I wore an olive green suit. YES, A SUIT. That is the worst color on me; I looked DEAD. But, let us go back to the idea that I WORE A SUIT.

    ::sigh::
    The fact that I wore matching slacks and a sweater in my fourth grade class picture kind of let us know the suit was coming...

    1. Hahaha! Thank you for sharing that memory. I seriously thought about looking for my old school pictures to scan for this post, but had to be in my second grade class today and just ran out of time. Lucky me! (And lucky readers who were spared the horror.)
